Update, and video games for Christmas Hoo Ray!

I haven’t posted anything to the blog for like ten days now.  I came down with some sort of Bubonic Death-Plauge this week.  That worked out okay though, since for Christmas I got a bunch of XBox 360 games.   Since getting off the couch was too much work, I just had my kids keep popping in various games between bouts of vomiting.

Mass Effect:  Holy crap, that’s a fun game.  Probably the single most engrossing role playing game I’ve played since Knights Of The Old Republic.  (and it is from the same company, so no surprise).  A lot of the mechanics are kind of weird, it is part RPG, part FPS, but the highlights are actually the conversations and the plot.   It isn’t black and white, good and evil, and you’ve got to make some tough choices, and there are some grown-up situations.  Overall, I loved it, and will be playing through it again.

Call Of Duty 4:  Modern Warfare:  The best COD game, by far.  An awesome shooter, with some really neat scripted moments.  The level where you are in a Spectre gunship, blasting the living hell out of the countryside is probably my favorite.  The piggyback level is great too.

Guitar Hero III:  The Correias have been Guitar Heroless since my boy decided to spin the CD for number II like a record, and scratched it to death.  Guitar Hero is just plain fun, I don’t care who you are.  Ironically, I can beat Satan in a rock off, but I can’t beat Tom Morello on medium.  Damn him.  But come on, he’s the guy from Rage Against the Machine (angry, about something… or other… hell if I know) and Audio Slave (which rocks the awesome).

Books still not here yet

  1. Gotta agree with you on Mass Effect. I’m so far a *little* dissapointed that it’s more linear and less sandboxy than I expected (I didn’t think “sandbox” equated to just “900000 sidequests”), but then again I’m not finished with it yet, and the various ways to complete said plethora of sidequests is pretty damn slick. Really, the only major flaw with this game as far as I can tell is the soundtrack. Space is all impressive, etc, we get it. It doesn’t need to sound like the synths from “Pod People” that MST3K spend so long mocking.

Though you forgot to mention one of the best points: Seth Green as Joker. 😉

  2. Hope your stomach feels better, and I have to agree, COD4 is just so much fun. I especially like the plane mission at the very end. Especially the intro.

    “Surely you must be joking.”
“I’m not joking, and don’t call me Shirley.”

  3. COD4 is pretty good. I REALLY liked Mass Effect. Now that I know more about the character classes I’m going to play through it again. It took about 27 hours the first time and I think I only missed about 4 side quests – stuff that got locked out when I couldn’t return to the Citadel.

GH3 was the first of that series I’d played and I instantly loved it. Then we got Rock Band. We never played GH3 again. You want some serious fun, get a bunch of people together and play Rock Band. Guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. Hilarity will ensue.

Can’t wait for the book! Glad you’re feeling better, too.

  4. Hi, I’m Bob W’s daughter (he did some of your proofreading, right?) You can’t beat Tom Morello on Medium??? I’m a GIRL, and I beat him! And no excuses about being sick either 😉

My folks have nothing but rave things to say about the book – think I just may have to check it out and send my copy to my dad to have it signed by you!

My husband can only dream about getting Rock Band.
