I've been taken to task by an Obama disciple. Bring it on.

I recently received this comment.

I think you’ve taken one tiny line of one speech and blown it totally out of proportion. Show me more evidence that Obama is going to create a second security force outside of Homeland security and we’ll talk.

What I don’t understand is why it’s such a bad thing for students to do some mandatory volunteer work. It helps them to see beyond their selves– a major problem in today’s society. The view point of rich kids is “ME ME ME,” and if they were required to reach out and do something beneficial to the whole of society then maybe they would consider some of the social careers that are in desperate need of qualified applicants– nursing and teaching especially. Also, the tax credit wouldn’t necessarily go to the student, but the parent who claims that student as a dependent on their taxes. If my parents had received a $4000 tax break due to my community service, they would have rejoiced! I would not have received that tax break, because I was still a dependent of my parents until after I graduated from college, like the vast majority of college students. This is a HUGE benefit for middle class and poor families trying to break a bad financial cycle with education. I think it’s a great idea.

This was from somebody named Katie, in response to this posting of mine about Barack’s Mandatory Volunteer programs.  http://larrycorreia.wordpress.com/2008/07/07/baracks-brown-shirts/#comment-2023

So now I have to beat poor Katie over the head. When I’m done, some of you will probably think that I’m being mean. You’ll think that I’m not being fair. Well too bad.  Life is mean, and it sure as hell isn’t fair, and the sooner people like this wrap their brains around that fact the safer the rest of us will be from their meddling.

I think you’ve taken one tiny line of one speech and blown it totally out of proportion

If you think that it is okay for a presidential candidate to throw out random things about how they’re going to start a trillion dollar unconstitutional program we’re going to have a hard time communicating.  You don’t get to that level of politics by saying things on accident.

‘Proportion’? Are you serious?  A presidential candidate threw out a random tidbit about how he wants to make the largest change to the US government since… well… ever… and that’s ‘out of proportion’?  Out of proportion would be digging a trench around Washington DC, filling it with lava, and then using trebuchets to launch plague rats into the city, only that would cost less.

Hmmm… If I ran for office and used my Lava Plague Rat Plan as a platform, I might actually get somewhere.

Show me more evidence that Obama is going to create a second security force outside of Homeland security and we’ll talk.

I don’t have to show you anything.  I’m not your messiah.  He’s the one proposing the Brownshirt plan.  What?  Do you think he said it on accident?  So Obama’s either stupid, or he’s evil.  Take your pick.  That line wasn’t in the transcript of his speech given to the press.  That was a slip.  It was an off the cuff comment that reveals what kind of man he really is.  Unfortunately you won’t see any evidence of this until after he gets elected, and with a congress of bootlicking sycophants, there won’t be talk, he’ll just do it.

What I don’t understand is why it’s such a bad thing for students to do some mandatory volunteer work.

Read what you just wrote.  Engage your friggin’ brain for a second.  MANDATORY VOLUNTEER.  It’s an oxymoron (with the accent on moron).  If you’re coercing someone to do something, or you’re paying them, then they’re not volunteers.

It helps them to see beyond their selves– a major problem in today’s society.

I missed the part where that’s the government’s problem. Hell, I missed the part where that’s my problem.  If you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night, worrying about how altruistic our college students are, you need to take a valium and go back to sleep.  It’s none of your damned business.

The view point of rich kids is “ME ME ME,” and if they were required to reach out and do something beneficial to the whole of society then maybe they would consider some of the social careers that are in desperate need of qualified applicants– nursing and teaching especially.

Wait a second.  When I went to college I made $7.15 an hour.  I put myself through school by working my ass off.  I didn’t know very many ‘rich’ kids at Utah State, but then again, I didn’t get to go to Princeton on the taxpayer’s dime like Michelle Obama.

ME ME ME?  Damn right.  It is all about me.  I’m an American.  That means that I have the freedom to do what I want.  I don’t have to live my life according to the dictates of a semi-retarded majority. I’m not a member of a collective.  I’m an independent being who does what I want.  I’m not a slave, I’m not a serf, and I’m not a servant.

Stupid liberals can’t seem to wrap their minds around the fact that you can’t indoctrinate compassion.  You can’t force people to be nice.  If you coerce me into doing mandatory volunteer work, I’ll HATE whatever it is you’re trying to make me do.

Your plan is to punish people you don’t like, in the vain hopes that they’re going to suddenly decide to become inner-city school teachers or something.  I missed that part of the Constitution.

Also, the tax credit wouldn’t necessarily go to the student, but the parent who claims that student as a dependent on their taxes. If my parents had received a $4000 tax break due to my community service, they would have rejoiced!

I was not a dependant.  I moved out when I was 16.  I had to survive on my own or perish.  I think I can see why we have a different view of the world.  Your view, however, is stupid.

Your idea is presumptuous and self-centered.  You want everybody to do what you want, and you’re willing to use the power of the state to enforce it.  That is the ultimate in self-righteous egocentric claptrap.  You assume that your way is morally superior and everyone can fall into line.

I’m in favor of freedom.  Freedom to choose your own path.  Freedom to volunteer if I want to.  America was made great because we were a nation where free men could choose their own way, their own path.  Our government was created to protect our rights, not to tell us what to do, not to make up morality, or tell us what to do with our time, energy, and property. That was nice while it lasted.

I would not have received that tax break, because I was still a dependent of my parents until after I graduated from college, like the vast majority of college students.

I don’t care.  That’s my tax money you’re taking to subsidize your false morality.  If the things you believed in were worth volunteering for, then somebody would actually volunteer.  Bribery isn’t volunteering.

You may think that I’m heartless.  That I don’t like volunteerism…  That I’m some sort of right-wing fascist.  However I’m willing to bet that I’ve personally volunteered far more than you ever have.

I served two years as a missionary. I bet that I’ve spent more hours, working about eighty hours a week, during those two years, with zero pay, than Barack Obama has in his entire life.  Not only did I not get paid, I PAID to go. I put my life on hold to do what I thought was right. I spent more time in the inner-city than Barack ever has, and he dares to presume to lecture me about volunteering?

I volunteer now.  I teach people to shoot, for free.  I’m betting that that’s not going to be on the Brownshirt approved list.  I volunteer at my church.  I’m willing to bet that since my organization doesn’t have gay Boy Scout leaders, then that won’t  count either.  But somehow being forced by the government to volunteer to do something that I don’t believe in is morally superior.  If I’m either bribed, or forced by my school in order to graduate, to do something that somebody else decided was important, then that’s somehow good.

The way it is now, people can choose what they believe, and then exercise their free agency accordingly.  Your method relies on coercion, force, or bribery, to make others fall into line with your choices.

So which one of us is the fascist now, Katie?

This is a HUGE benefit for middle class and poor families trying to break a bad financial cycle with education.

Goodie for them. I grew up dirt poor, unlike Barack Obama. I know what real poverty is. I was the first member of my family to get a college education.

You know what really breaks the ‘bad financial cycle’? Quit waiting around for the government to come and make your life better.  Quit waiting around for the government to punish somebody who has more stuff than you.  Government is not Robin Hood, robbing from the rich to give to the poor.  Government is a giant, forceful, idiotic brute that clubs everybody indiscriminately, punishes success, and rewards stupidity, all while being cheered on by fools.

I think it’s a great idea.

See what I said about fools…

  1. Mandatory volunteer work is another word for slavery. 😉

I’d sure like somebody in the media, anybody, ask him what the hell he meant by that statement.

  2. I agree with what you’re saying, Larry, and as a rant it reads very well. But the unkindness (personal attacks) detracts from the message. But that aside….

    Amen, bro.

  3. I’d like to point out that you can’t just give everyone a $4,000 tax credit, while maintaining spending and taxation at the same rate. To get the four grand to give back to you, Obama will first have to raise your taxes by four grand.

  4. “Obama will first have to raise your taxes by four grand.”

No Ten grand, Don’t forget the umpty eleven bureaucrats who have to earn $60,000 per year to redistribute your money to you.

  5. keepbreathing, I’m not a hero. Guys getting shot at by angry Muslims right now are heros. I’m an average American that’s sick and tired of having to be held accountable for a bunch of whining ninny-hammers feelings.

dbeacon, sorry man. I probably shouldn’t insult her directly, but this whole caring liberal schtick is getting really old. They care more. So that allows them to do whatever they want, with no consequences. They can abdicate all of their decision making processes and then pat themselves on the back about how righteous they are, when are they are is spoiled children who don’t have the fortitude to make their own decisions.

  6. I stopped reading at Mandatory Volunteer Work.

Any snarky commentary on my part just pales to that. It is the Ultimate.

  7. “Out of proportion would be digging a trench around Washington DC, filling it with lava, and then using trebuchets to launch plague rats into the city, only that would cost less.”

Yes, but it would ulitimately be more effective and good for the country… and we could sell tickets.

  8. Well said Larry! Freedom truly scares these people and Self-Determination is a Cancer for them. Yet they are not willing to put one drop of sweat into the programs they allegedly support.

  9. Can I assist in supplying Rats to fling? I live just outside DC, and it’d be nice to see the Trebuchet in action!

  10. I’ve long said that the Police State will come from the Left, not the Right. Obama’s security force will be the proof of the pudding. “Mandatory Volunteer” is NewSpeak.

  11. Larry, one day I’m gonna come through Utah. And when I do, I’m coming to FBMG. And when I do, I’m taking you out for drinks. That was the best fisking I’ve seen, well, I think ever.

And the Lava Plague Rat Plan would most certainly get you my vote. And with the proceeds from the sales of plague rats to fling into the city you could finance your entire campaign!

Insults or no, you are a fine voice of freedom. Bravo, sir.

  12. I think I tend to disagree with this the following as you’ve got it written down in your reply–
“Government is a giant, forceful, idiotic brute that clubs everybody indiscriminately, punishes success, and rewards stupidity, all while being cheered on by fools.”
Nor will I endorse this as you have it worded —
“ME ME ME? Damn right. It is all about me. I’m an American. That means that I have the freedom to do what I want.”
Not sure of Katie’s age, regardless, her idealistic views betray her understanding the world as it truly turns; whereas, it’s evident you’ve been around the block more than once and ‘hear’ and ‘see’ the deceptions the Obama campaign’s teet is offering with its free milk and cookies.
I’d suggest to Katie that she learn about volunteering by spending a few weeks with you as you teach people to shoot — but I’d ask she’d approach it with her mind open because I think she’d learn quite a bit more than she’d believe possible.

  13. Those drinks will have to be Coke Zero. Knocking back a few cold ones isn’t as popular in Utah as elsewhere.

  14. My father came to the US in 1956 (legally I might add) with $5.00 in his pocket. Through hard work he managed to get two kids through college (I worked full time and my sister did too) and make a nice living for himself and my mom. Our family never took one thin dime from the .gov, but we sure paid “our fair share.”

but this whole caring liberal schtick is getting really old. They care more. So that allows them to do whatever they want, with no consequences. They can abdicate all of their decision making processes and then pat themselves on the back about how righteous they are, when are they are is spoiled children who don’t have the fortitude to make their own decisions.
    Amen brother. . .

  15. Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

  16. We had something like mandatory volunteer work in my country in recent history.
It was in fiftees, short after commies get to power. If someone was from any reason considered by commie tribunals as a enemy of socialism or agent of (american) imperialism, and haven’t been hanged, was send to such camps for “mandatory volunteers” to dig uranium ore for russian nukes.
Those “mandatory volunteers” were protected from outside by razor wire fence and by watch towers with mashine guns. The uranium ore was dig by basic tools like pick and shovel and without any protection against radiation. Many of those “mandatory volunteers” died by radiation, exhaution, accidents, or by warden brutality. Those who tried to escape were shot to back or tortured to death to make an example.
Long story short, any resemblance with nazi concentration camps is purely accidental, these were made in russian gulag style.

By modern day commies, these concentration camps were somethig like boyscout camps, only some idividuals has that arogance to die there and mar the fun. Every time I hear such crap I think: “Oh god, why it’s ilegal to shoot commies?”

So if Obama is going to make some mandatory volunteer work camps, bet you enjoy lot of fun there. (in case you’re masochist)

  17. You hit that out of the park. I’d say it ranks right up there with some of Vin Suprynowicz’s best responses.

And no, you don’t need to ease up on the “personal attacks” unless you really want to. After that, I figure she has about a 5% chance of seeing she’s an idiot. That’s 5% more than she had before she read your response, and it’ll probably sink in a whole lot deeper than a nice, calm explanation.

    Bravo!

  18. Good one but saly enough I think its falling on deaf ears. I have never known a Lib to wake up.

I agree that the police state will come from the Left. History proves that the socialists / communists are always the more heavy-handed because their grand schemes won’t stand and function on their own without being force fed to the populace. On the other hand, the free market system stands and thrives independently of government interference and that is what rankles the Lib.

  19. Throwing rats, even plague infected ones, into that politician infested hellhole is just too cruel.

    Think of the poor rats.

    Fling hippies instead.

  20. Wow, two years as a “…guy riding by on a bike, in a a tie. That’s a Mormon.” (to the tune of “That’s Amore”)
And now you teach people to shoot!
What a giving spirit. The world sure is a better place thanks to you.
    You people are idiots.

  21. Help me out, Chuck. What bunch of people are idiots, Mormons, gun nuts, or conservatives?

So volunteering for my church doesn’t count, but volunteering for Barack’s Brownshirts and getting paid $40 an hour is totally awesome. Gotcha.

I’m pretty sure that Christian volunteers have done about 100 times more to help the world (this week) than Democrat based pyramid schemes have accomplished (since 1932).

And on the teaching people to shoot, just so you know, I get paid $40 per person when I teach CCW, so if I taught 300 people for free so far this year, (here, I’ll help you, because I know liberals can’t do math) that would mean that I personally gave up $12,000 worth of my time.

When I teach a CCW class, I make anywhere from $100-$400 an hour, so when I do that for free for miltiary, college students, and school employees, that means I make less money. Hmm… since I make like 5% of what Barack and Michelle bring home, I wonder which one of us has volunteered a greater portion of our resources to volunteerism?

You know, Chuck. WordPress orginally blocked your post as spam, but I wanted it to be posted. Because somebody needs to speak up for the Obama Disciples. I eagerly await your response! Shower us with wisdom!

(well, Obama supporters shower you with something, but it ain’t wisdom… but either way, I’d love to hear your elaboration, because fisking idiots is kind of a hobby for me)

  22. Billy wants a trebuchet that flings automobiles for the next movie. I’m sure it could be adjusted for a payload of rats, instead.

Flinging hippies only works if we infect them with plague, first. Fortunately, I live in New Mexico, and know where we can acquire plague. (From local rats, obviously.)

    -Ogre (No, the other one)

  23. if she wants more teachers and nurses, she should find a way to reward people who become nurses and teachers. Those are hard jobs and (at least in utah) our teachers don’t get paid really all that well. The kids who have a passion for teaching, but also a passion for success end up going where the money is. the ones who stay seem to have a spouse with a good job so they can afford to teach. If you want more volunteerism, talk with PR people and hook them up with charities. or do high school field trips to a habitat for humanity site. Habitat is so much fun, there should be more in the world.
I agree with her that people need to change attitudes, but force usually doesn’t work. larry can tell you how well that works as a missionary. If you bully someone into being baptized, they usually disappear afterward and don’t return your calls.

  24. I have heard that a journalist, who followed Mother Teresa around for a day, watching her wash the feet of lepers, said “I wouldn’t do that for a million dollars”. Mother Teresa supposedly said “neither would I”.
If you’re getting paid to do it, you’re there for the paycheck. If you’re volunteering , it’s because it’s the right thing to do.

  25. How about flinging infected governors, city councils, state reps, mayors, into DC. Oh, crap they might breed !

  26. Chuck obviously sees the gun as type of cootie/boogie man affliction on society – one of man’s Never Should Have Invented And In Today’s Society Serves No Purpose Get Rid OFs….
for gosh, there is No Moral Responsibility taught to those who want to learn self defense thru CCW,
    no it’s
like a car in the hands of a drunk–
like a steroid’ed bully, or a gang of bullies–
or someone who only occasionally cheats on tests–spouses–income tax–
anything contrary to what Chuck knows is best
for the rest of the world is wholly short sighted and hence -irresponsible….
I’m not entirely sure I understand his regard to Mormons and their missions – I’m venturing it is his way of saying it’s Not Volunteering per say, rather a “mandatory” volunteering because it’s an expectation???????
    Like
I should expect to make a lot less money if I volunteer
but you people are missing the point on what is important to the definition of volunteering??????
Truly, his insights are indeed the insights of many more liberally tolerant so can also be more liberally intolerant and knowing — and therefore we can get to the root of all the nonChucks of the world –
“What a giving spirit. The world sure is a better place thanks to you.You people are idiots.”
    Indeed Chuck!
    Indeed.

  27. You gave it to her good, thank you. No one has ever talked to her that way before, probably. They sure do like to tell everyone how we should live. They have no ideas of the freedoms we have lost in just the last 60 years. They would like to give all this money to 3 world countries, but not to bring them up to our level. they want to take us down to theirs.

  28. “When I teach a CCW class, I make anywhere from $100-$400 an hour, so when I do that for free for miltiary, college students, and school employees, that means I make less money. ”

When I teach carry classes to returning vets for free, I never consider it volunteering. I just consider it to be the right thing to do.

  29. “I agree with what you’re saying, Larry, and as a rant it reads very well. But the unkindness (personal attacks) detracts from the message. But that aside….

    Amen, bro.”

I agree with what this poster said. That being said, what did she expect? Has she read your blog? Did she think you would say, “gee, she has a good point, I’ll change my position?” I am not suggesting that you couldn’t be persuaded by a good argument, but how often does that happen via an e-mail or blog posting from a stranger?

She may have had a good point, but didn’t do a great job making it. I have posted on sites that had views contrary to mine and have gotten into internet pissing matches. As tempting as it is to react, I try to restrain myself because it doesn’t usually do any good. Occasionally, I will get involved in a rational discussion on politics, but that is pretty rare.

  30. Princewally, no disagreement. I was just trying to point out to our erstwhile friend Chuck that when he mocks my volunteer work I’m giving up something a lot more valuable than any of these idiot Mandatory Volunteer people.

I don’t just teach returning vets. I teach anybody who’s Active, Reserve, or Guard. Last night half my class was 19th SF BSC.

  31. I think that I found a mistake:

“Out of proportion would be digging a trench around Washington DC, filling it with lava, and then using trebuchets to launch plague rats into the city, only that would cost less.”

It would clearly NOT be out of proportion to what they’ve launched in our direction for at least the last 76 years.

  32. Mandatory Volunteering will kill all the summer youth jobs and youth job-programs – they are in direct conflict, siphoning them away to…College Kidz? WTF good does that do ANYBODY?
College Kids SHOULD go into debt, especially if they think that what they’re doing is going to be so incredibly valuable in Teh Futurz.
Go on you History of Consciousness Major!! 🙂

  33. “I’m an American.

    AMEN!

I eagerly await Katie’s rebuttal. Katie? Are you still out there?

  34. Robin Hood – Season 2 The New Robin Hood is fun and innovative. I was always excited to watch this series show! Highly Recommened!!!

  35. “This is a HUGE benefit for middle class and poor families trying to break a bad financial cycle with education.”

More of a ‘huge benefit’ than the Pell Grants for $4800 a year?

More of a ‘huge benefit’ than the government-secured educational loans that *anyone* can get?
