Still playing catch up

Well, I said there would be more blogging last week after we got moved in, but then the next day my 2002 Ford Focus decided to commit suicide. Towed it to the shop. Timing belt came off. (135k, so that was unexpected) Discovered that “non-interuption” engine only applied up to 1,500 RPM when it then switches to the “Grenade” setting. Which meant car shopping… Yay.

I hate making payments though. I’ve always saved up, and then gone car shopping, so that I could just buy outright. I don’t like paying interest. I like collecting interest. However, that is very difficult to do when your car implodes right after you closed on a house. But anyways, I think I found a ’07 Ford Taurus that is in my price range with 50K miles on it. I’ll probably end up picking that up today.

So between car shopping and living out of boxes and trying to finish the rough draft of MHA, I’ll hurry up and get something else posted. Oh, and I also finally got to read Darkship Thieves by Sarah Hoyt. Excellent book. I’ll post a review when I get a chance.

  1. Buy a really cheap car then then MHV comes out take all the mad $ you’ll be making from us poor schlubs that are going to buy it and then yo can get a big Mercedes or something. 😉

  2. Mercedes? How about an original H1 with the “zombie repellent package”? It’s never too early to prepare for the apocalypse.

  3. I’m completely willing to let you borrow my ’95 Oldsmobile Aurora. I don’t need it while I’m away for college, and the thing has some seriously thick armor and a V8.

  4. I feel your pain. I’ve been hoping my eight-year-old, 116,000-mile Dodge Intrepid holds together; it’s long since paid for, I’ve kept it up and I really don’t have the money to buy another car at this point. (I’ve used the money otherwise saved on car payments to pay off all my other debts and now am putting the rest in the bank.)

The good news: the 2.7 V6 in my Intrepid has a timing belt, not a chain.

The bad news is that Intrepids, like certain other models of Mopars, have a reputation for eating transmissions. Which reminds me, it’s about time to have that serviced. And probably redo the front brakes as well. Sigh…

  5. did you replace the timing belt at ~100K like you are told to in the owners manual?

and if you are going to get a Mustang, and i love my 09, get the 11, the new 5.0 is a monster!

      1. yes, that is true, but the ’11 is so much more car then the ’10, and the ’12 boss is what i have my eye on, and its not too much.

  6. I will say a few words about your Focus going to the “Great Car lot in the Sky” I would get a used truck with a four door crew cab. More room for a standing weapons rack. You never know. Plus you get to drive sitting upright, which is a HUGE plus.

    Peace and travel well.

  7. Sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved vehicle. There is a lesson here for those who will hear. Homie no longer does timing belts. Buy the repair manual before the car. Just as an example, the Chevy Cavalier has both a timing CHAIN and a tensioner. No slack there. I’ve replaced so many timing belts for myself and friends that I’ve concluded that they are intended to last only to the first statistical trade-in.
