More Hugo nominating ideas

There are only a few days left to get your nominations in for the Hugo awards.  This was posted in the comments of the last thread, but it was such a good idea that I figured it needed its own post.

Ok, I’m nominating Legion for the puppies the children etc. but now I’ve started my own campaign to nominate Hank Reinhardt’s Book Of Knives: A Practical and Illustrated Guide to Knife Fighting .
Why?
Because I can’t nominate him for 40+ years of bringing live sword demos to science fiction cons. And I can’t nominate him for launching the modern sword industry and thus the WMA movement as well changing the way authors everywhere write about edged weapons. And I can’t nominate him for making Kukri a household word and thus indirectly encouraging Owen Pitt to carry one. Because I can’t nominate him for being the real world model for Ringo’s Edmund Talbot.

That is a great idea. If you’ve not checked out the Book of Knives, it is awesome. Hank passed away a few years ago. If a writer anywhere got their sword/knife details right in a book, they probably owe part of it to the work and research Hank did. If you’ve watched the documentary Reclaiming the Blade, about western martial arts, he’s in it.

I’m nominating Book of Knives for Best Supporting Work.

Geeky Hobbies: Sunday Afternoon Painting WiP
The Drowning Empire, Episode 9: Letters of Moto Subotai

  1. Sadly, ballots for dead people will be discarded. Book of Knives would bee a great “Best Related Work” but it’s technically ineligible, and no amount of nominating it will make it eligible.

Attending the WSFS meeting and attempting to create a category for works like these might have an impact, but that’s a REAL investment of time and money.

  2. Looking at the Hugo rules, I see nothing requiring the author be alive to be eligible. It simply says the work has to be released for the first time (or substantially modified from a previous form) in the given year.

  3. You know, this year’s Hugo list is going to be pretty interesting considering how much your fan base (myself included) will be skewing the voting. I also mean interesting in a good way.

  4. … Between Hank, Legion and Schlock we should be able to drive the ICP to critical mass. ( I realize the concepts are unrelated, but we are living in the Jedi Mind Meld times).

    1. I had to think about that one for a moment. There’s a fantasy series by the name Book of Swords

  5. Look for the video series Deadly Duels. It was a three part special which Hank had much to do with. It was only released on VHS which I have original copies of.
