BOOK BOMB! Her Brother’s Keeper by Mike Kupari

Jack Wylder here to kick off the Book Bomb for Mike Kupari’s ‘Her Brother’s Keeper’. The ILoH is currently in Seattle so he’s asked me to post this for him and he’ll do the updates and such as he can. I’ve got coins to pack so I’ll just repeat what he’s already said about this:
“I’m going to try something a little different on this one. Now that Amazon has instituted a long delay (I’m guessing it is about 8 hours) before the sales rank changes, it has made it harder to get that awesome, wild west, crazy swing vibe that we used to get with BBs. And now the high point spike arrives in the middle of the night, when most people in North America are asleep.”
“So this time I’m actually going to stick up the BB post on the 2nd. The physical book actually officially releases on the 3rd. That’s our official date. So instead of having a 24 hour book bomb, it will be more like a 36 hour book bomb. That way hopefully we’ll see the cool number spike that day like we used to, instead of the day after.”

“please tell your friends and spread the word. I want this one to be a good one. Mike Kupari is a good man, one of my best friends, a damned good author, a vet, a retired EOD Tech, and if the purpose of Book Bombs is to give a deserving author who could really use a publicity boost, a boost, then Mike is the guy. Because life has kicked him in the nuts a few times, and this debut solo novel is an amazing opportunity to launch a great career.”

“Not to mention, the book is REALLY GOOD. I was one of the alpha readers. Honestly, what it most reminds me of is David Drake’s The Voyage (that is a good thing). It is an unabashed, people go into space and DO STUFF novel. It is world hopping space opera, where rocket ships land on their jets as God and Robert Heinlein intended.”

  1. Woohoo – a new audible book for me as recommended by the ILoH! The Audbile process preorders it so the book (and cha-ching count) should show up on the 3rd.

  2. I bought the EARC, and I’ve preordered the dead tree version. This is officially my favorite book of the year.

  3. I bought the eARC over at Baen months ago (sadly, still not read) but just bought it from Amazon anyway. Keep writing great stuff Mike.

  4. Got it at Baen and loved the book. I’d immigrate to New Austin, and it’s only a…way stop in this story. And Zanzibar feels very authentic – you’d think by the time we get off this rock we’d learn to stop creating ghettos.

The main story is wrapped up nicely, so you aren’t left hanging, but I expect there to be many more stories in this world. Great job, Mike!

  5. I got this as an ebook with a Baen bundle and it was excellent — taut, smart, and fun. Having very much enjoyed Mr. Kupari’s joint efforts this book did not disappoint.

  6. Purchased from Amazon this morning. Looking forward to it (after reading Pack Dynamics and The Aeronaut’s Windlass).

  7. For what it’s worth this blog post generated an Audible sale from me. The narrator is new to me but she has a long list of science fiction and fantasy novels to her credit so that’s a good sign. Science Fiction used to be my favorite genre but as a young adult without realizing it I switched to crime fiction and urban fantasy so this is going to be like a homecoming for me.

  16. A few days late to the party, but I just bought it. (Sorry, had to wait until I got paid.) At least I helped keep its place in the rankings.

  17. A little off-topic here, but I just finished Son of the Black Sword. Wonderful book. Very much looking forward to the next in the series. That’ll be in a couple of weeks, right? 😉

    1. Larry will probably have it done in a couple of weeks, but everyone else in the process is much slower. 😉

      1. John Ringo’s Muse might be able to do that, but Larry works differently. He’s more of a skilled craftsman pumping out a fairly high but stable output, compared to Ringo’s absolutely amazing burst efforts and then nada for a while. There are 3-4 projects that we’ve been made aware of in the pipe already, and then the plethora of other stuff he’s working on waiting to drop into the queue as interest and demand dictate.

The Good News is that it appears the response to SotBS is good enough to keep it on the Priority list. I know that’s I’ve read so far is great.

        1. My only real problem with Ringo’s output is that he sometimes seems to lose interest in a series after that initial burst. I’m STILL waiting for the next Empire of Man and Troy Rising novels.

  18. Way off topic, sorry!

I read Larry’s post on the classics, and it really hit me how my son is having trouble reading the stuff that 5th graders usually read(he is homeschooled, but my wife wanted him to read these books because it’s award winning!!1!). I read a ton growing up, including a lot of fantasy/sci-fi/horror and struggled with boring books.

I don’t know what type of books he’d like, so I want to get him a good variety of different genres – what would you (or any one else) recommend for 5th graders to read? Westerns, space, fantasy, anything. Just something that is awesome to read.

    1. Steve, I don’t know if you’ll see this (8 days on) but I can resist.

You can’t go wrong with the Heinlein “juveniles”: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heinlein_juveniles
My personal favorites: Have Spacesuit, Will Travel, Podkayne of Mars and Red Planet.)

      John Christopher’s Tripods series: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tripods#The_White_Mountains_.281967.29

Isaac Asimov wrote a series of “juveniles” , too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucky_Starr_series

I was also probably in 5th or 6th grade when I read Asimov’s collected robot short stories, and they didn’t go over my head (much): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I,_Robot

      Good luck!
