Geeky Hobbies: Little Space Dudes 7 (Mercenaries from Infinity)

This Friday’s Geeky Hobby posting is mercenaries for Infinity.

Being mercs, the paint schemes are basically whatever colors I felt like playing with at the time.

Kaplans, because I wanted to experiment with dirty white armor. The light box pic came out kind of washed out on these guys because the whites actually turned out really good (and white is tough to paint)

That’s the fun thing about mercs, whatever colors I feel like at that moment, with no need to tie into an overall theme.

Orange is another color that gives me a challenge.

Some high value targets. The guy with his hands behind his back was Pat Tracy’s character from Writer Nerd Game Night.

This is Scarface and Cordelia. I’m really pleased with how they turned out.

I had a lot of fun shading the bright greens.

That freehand star came out a little crooked, but keep in mind that on this screen it is about 10x bigger than in real life.

This big fella is the Anaconda, and that’s the pilot. For whatever reason I wanted to mess with what were basically Easter egg colors. And then I rolled it in the mud and shot him a bunch.

I wanted smoke, dust, mud splotches, and wear and tear. Overall I’m pretty pleased.

Check out the bullet spall on the neck armor.

Why haven't I gotten my patch yet? It's been 2 weeks!

  1. I haven’t painted since the lead figure days. How much trimming and stuff do you need to do on the modern figures before painting? I see you do a lot of work on your bases. Do you do that yourself or share some with your kids?

    1. I do the bases myself. Simple, glue and sand/rocks is all. The amount of trimming depends on the particular mini. No matter what you go with, metal or plastic, you’re going to need a good hobby knife and will probably need to cut off some mold lines. This particular brand has good QC though, and I’ve had very few with bad mold lines through any significant parts (like eye sockets, I HATE that)

  2. Damn, Larry, the grey, white, and aqua one looks incredible.

Is it supposed to be a power armor or a mecha type unit? Not knowing the game and if there are non-human races, the scale has me a little confused.

Also are these figs from the game you are doing the game-based stories for?

    1. These are for a different game than the one I write for. That’s Warmachine.

They are like small mechs. You can see the pilot’s arms stick out, and the robot’s arms mimic the movements.

      1. There’s a good view of the arm set-up here at the :39 mark.

(the animation is from the 2004 Appleseed movie, based on one of the earliest examples of this type of set-up – Deunan and her Guges landmate from Masamune Shirow’s Appleseed manga; no idea on the source of the music)

  3. Awesome attention to detail, Larry! It really is evident even on the bases. Love what you do and do what you love. Good motto for everyone (especially geeks!).
