Update Post, Back from GenCon and Yard Moose Mountain Road

I got back from GenCon yesterday. I had a good time. Saw a bunch of my fans, had two good signings, and a fun Q&A session.

But the main reason to go to GenCon is the LOOT. ๐Ÿ™‚

I hit the dealer room hard this year, but I think I came in under my previous years record of having to call my wife to warn her I was busing out the credit card because I’d burned through all my cash THE FIRST DAY… BEFORE LUNCH. This time I bought a ton of MDF miniature terrain, a slew of minis, and some new game books.

GenCon is one of the ones I do for fun. I actually wouldn’t mind just going as a regular dude, and not being on any panels at all, so I could just play games the whole time. ย But when you’re a writer they put you to work.

I do have to apologize to you guys because I missed one of my panels. I was a presenter for the Baen Fantasy short story contest, and afterwards we take the winners out to a nice dinner. I was inadvertently double booked and didn’t realize it until that morning, so had to get somebody to fill in for me on the Writing Fun panel.

Yesterday was my birthday, so thank you for the many happy birthday wishes. My Facebook feed is currently buried.

But the coolest thing this weekend was getting home and seeing this.

Road

The approval from UDOT to begin construction on the provisional Yard Moose Mountain Road finally came through while I was out of town. They immediately went to work.

This is going to be an epic project. To put the scale into perspective, the green Ford Expedition way down at the bottom of the hill is at the entrance. From there to where I was standing to take this picture, that is only about 1/10th of the total distance we have to cover.

The goal for 2017 is all the infrastructure and permits, road, power, well drilling, etc. 2018 fortress compound–err… I mean house. Yeah. House. That’s the ticket.

  1. Congrats on the start of the road! Is it going to be straight or a series of switchbacks?

    And a belated Happy Birthday!

      1. A couple of switchbacks would slow a mechanized approach and offer you clean shots at thinner side and top armor. Just saying. #RememberJanet Reni

        1. My grandpa lived through the German occupation of the Netherlands, and I think one of the things he took from the experience was a love for long driveways.

  2. Thanks for being so gracious and letting me stop you in the hall the other morning. It was a pleasure to meet you and shake your hand. Glad you got home safe.

  3. Still going forward with the plans about a personal little writing hut? Or was it just something someone mentioned?

  4. Once that road gets finished, you will need to mount an expedition to *get* to the Expedition if you for some strange reason leave it at that road…

Seriously though, that looks like a lot of fun. Not so much the permitting, but the giant dirt pile and heavy equipment to puch it around with. *chuckle* Glad ya’ll got home safe.

  5. To quote from one of my favorite shows, “And so it begins.” You should save all those nice smaller boulders at strategic locations. Never can tell when you will need to roll some down on uninvited guests. The larger ones should be perfect for the trebuchet behind the walls at the top.

    1. Not to mention those “stump=busting ” charges you tragically forgot at about at really awkward points of the slope…

        1. Does the moat have lasers or are they issued to the sharks? I though it was illegal to arm sharks in Utah!

          1. A lot of people make that mistake. It’s actually illegal to graft human arms onto sharks.

  6. Thanks for working all those GenCon Writers Symposium panels Larry. I enjoyed the ones I could make and my wife made all of yours I think (she spent like 10 hours a day in the symposium…). Listening to you geek out about guns in the hall for two hours Saturday was a lot of fun as well ๐Ÿ™‚

Frankly I think it’s one of the best “how to be a writer” conventions out there with better panelists and moderators than I see at SF/Fantasy cons and I include the WorldCons I’ve been to in that! 5 simultaneous writing focused tracks totalling 180 hours of programming in 3.5 days (Thursday 9am to Sunday 1pm) and frankly Larry is probably only upper middle as far as lifetime sales go in the authors speaking and many have decades more experience.

I wonder at the audience attendance totals for this con within a con. GenCon itself had over 60,000 unique attendees and over 19,000 events plus the dealers hall of dooooooom (“abandon all hope for your budget yee who enter here” should be put over the doors).

  7. Glad you had fun at Gen Con and got the permit situation straightened out. Also, congratulations on the record breaking Siege launch!
Sounds like the man upstairs wanted you to have an extra-special birthday. I suspect that the eclipse happened because the sun is sad your birthday’s over ๐Ÿ˜‰
Bonus: SJW butthurt on Twitter over the massive crowds Larry drew at Gen Con ๐Ÿ˜€

      1. That would be the guy who runs the “Antifascist Fiction Club”* and the crappy online magazine?

Yeah, that guy should probably spend more time writing pay copy rather than ranting about Trump on Twitter 16 hours a day.

*A $2.00 lapel pin can be yours for only twenty smackers. Fight capitalism!

  8. Congrats on the permit, and getting the road going. Looks like it will be really nice!
I bought Monster Hunter Siege and read it almost in one sitting. Worth waiting for. ~:D

  9. Great to see you at GenCon and sad I didn’t get to more of your panels. You made my kids’ day by saying hi on your way out of Shula’s to a panel.

    See you at DragonCon!

  10. So not that it’s any of my business, but what are you going to do for connectivity? The main reason the wife and I didn’t move out any further than we did is because of my addiction to high speed internet connectivity.

    You’re buying a telescope too, right? ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. So .. will this be listed on google maps et al as “Yard Moose Mountain Road” .. and if so, what are you planning on listing the fortress as? Dance club? (I kid, I kid)

    1. Putting it on Google Maps kinda defeats the purpose of having a proper lair for the International Lord of Hate.

      1. I’m pretty sure the ILOH will have a laser battery that scribes “Hooooon!” on every image captured by satellite. Just because. ๐Ÿ™‚
