My novel House of Assassins won the Dragon Award for Best Fantasy

Yesterday was the Dragon Awards at DragonCon. I won best fantasy with House of Assassins.

The Dragons are the premier fan popularity award. They’re open to everybody.

This is a huge honor. Thank you everyone. Congratulations to all the other winners and to all the nominees.  A bunch of my friends won as well, and congratulations to them. Some fantastic authors were recognized. A bunch of my friends were nominated but didn’t win, they were up there with the best of the best and I am sure you will get another chance.

On that note about chances, I asked you guys not to nominate me this year because I’d already won before, and I’d love for you to give other authors an opportunity to shine too. But you nominated me  anyway because you’re an oppositionally defiant bunch who does whatever you want.  (I think every time I mentioned the Dragons I specifically asked, please don’t nominate me again, and you guys were all like Am I Being Detained! You’re Not My Supervisor!)

But seriously, I want the Dragons to be successful for a long time. That means sharing the love.  I love DragonCon and will continue to promote the Dragons because I want them to have a gigantic number of participants that dwarfs other fan awards. I want everybody who loves sci-fi and fantasy to have a home free of snooty high-school mean girl gatekeepers.  I want everybody to have fun. So next year when you are nominating the books you loved, if I was #1, just bump me down a notch to give your next guy a shot. Getting recognized means a lot to an author, and I want others to experience that too.

You guys are awesome. My fans are amazing and I love you. I’ve got the best fan base in the business. Thank you. House of Assassins is probably one of the best books I’ve ever written, but that’s because the people at Baen are fantastic and I’ve got amazing editors. And thank you DragonCon for being all about fun, and putting the good times back in this business.  To the other nominees, you guys rock. Keep doing what you’re doing and keep making your fans happy.

  1. Insert “You’re not my supervisor” meme here. 😀

Congrats, a well deserved win. It was a very tough competition with a lot of awesome books.

  2. With your typical Correia, or, really, any of the “Puppy Author” books, the question is actually:

    “Am I being entertained?”

And the answer, of course, is HELL YEAH!!!

  3. Congrats, Larry! It’s well-deserved, and even though we’re occasionally a bunch of defiant dicks, we love your work!

  4. You deserve it, House of Assassins was the best Fantasy book of the last year.

I was disappointed there was no category in which to nominate “The Testimony of the Traitor Ratul”. Any plans to write more short stories set in the world of the Saga of the Forgotten Warrior?

  5. Congrats! Maybe someday you’ll get to be a real author and write genderfluid wereseal romances. I hear that sort of thing is a lock for a Nebula.????

  6. A very well-earned award, Larry. Sorry for being a bad minion and voting for you when you said not to. ~:D

Generally, out of the five books I bought this year, two of them won Dragons. Yours and David Weber’s. Finally, an award that reflects my tastes.

  7. “The acme of prose style is exemplified by that simple, graceful clause: “Pay to the order of. . . .”‘”

    -Robert A. Heinlein

    Congrats, Larry. Well deserved.

  8. Next year presents a small problem:

I really want to nominate Sarah for “Guardian”, you’re just going to be dragged along.

I know she’s won before, as have you, but DAMN it’s a good book.

  9. I thought the point of the Dragon Awards was to reflect what the *fans* thought, not what the organizers or authors wanted. So, mission accomplished?

But seriously Larry, you earned it.

  10. Congrats on the award. I don’t vote in the Dragons because there isn’t enough time between the announcement of the nomination shortlist to the closing of voting to read all the nominees. If there was more time to cast an informed ballot, I’d totally be in.

    Regards,
    Dann

  11. Totally your fault, Correia! Yes, yes, you say ‘don’t vote for me this year, spread the love around’ with your lips, but with your book, you then write the MOST AWESOME SFF pseudo-hindu ninja martial arts fantasy intrigue bad ass spy thriller soap opera with sea demons EVEH, so what is the hapless reader to do?

  12. (continued)
In fact, the book was so good, it deserved the Oscar, the Peabody, and the Nobel Kick Ass prize (the less well known twin to the Peace prize) as well as winning the MTV awards and the Soviet Order of Victory. Just because.

And take my money. When is the next one due out?

    1. She’s such a dummy. 😀 I’m Portuguese. The government decided to arbitrarily stick us in the Latino box for some stupid reason.

      1. I started to read her essay that you linked on MeWe.

I had to talk my brain cells off the ledge by loading cat videos.

    2. I like that she said I “supposedly” asked my fans not to nominate me. Well no shit, dummy, it’s right fucking there, ya big idiot. 😀

      1. Well, you can’t expect her to actually READ, right?

Also, you may have ASKED us not to vote for you, but in fact, it was a “nudge, nudge, wink, wink” request that actually told us to vote for you immediately.

Also, Brad, because we have no minds of our own, and you told us to vote for him. Or something.

      2. I’ve a vague recollection I nominated someone else.

I’ve been reading so few qualifying works that I had few options, and I’m not sure I saved the notes from putting together my nominations.

What was I supposed to do, take my marbles and go home for the final ballot, when I knew very well that HoA was the best of the nominations that I had read in that category?

    3. So… she picked the comic book correctly, out of all the different categories, and rather than give any credit to the fan vote takes mean flouncy-girl slaps at the winning authors. Hmm. I wonder if she recognizes that maybe she’s the one out of orbit regarding popularity? Probably not. Definitely not.

      1. Remember the scene in “Chernobyl” where the plant management is in absolute denial about their reactor exploding?
        That’s her.

  13. “Oppositionally Defiant” is going into my Twitter description NOW. Really enjoyed HOA. LOVING Guardian. Looking forward to whatever comes next, Larry.

  14. Us, you mean US, what is this oppositionally defiant of which you speak? LOL We’re those bitter clingers the left moans about, who value GOOD writing and good stories without the pablum of PCism stacked with the soul sucking social justice crap…

  15. I get the feeling you “hereby commanded” your fans to not vote for you in the Dragon awards, Larry, and they responded appropriately. 🙂

  16. Larry,
This isn’t that hard — just stop writing books that us fans enjoy and want to vote for. It isn’t that hard. Many others have done it. Maybe take a break from action and write a romantic story involving a poodle and a Siamese cat. The Siamese would never let one of their own get involved with a poodle. Easy, no votes from me.

  17. Congrats! And well deserved, though your support of other authors does you real credit. Loved the book! Eagerly await the third. BTB, for my birthday my daughter bought me your book, took me to dinner and then your signing at the Dallas Half-price books. After hearing you read now she’s a fan! She bought Son of the Black Sword and House of Assassins while I was waiting in line! Also…WHY ARE YOU READING WHEN YOU COULD BE FINISHING THE THIRD BOOK. GO AND WRITE!! Sheesh!! 😉
